America cultivates an attitude that “Nobody is better than me.” And as a corollary, nobody can prove themselves better than me by superior education and accomplishments.

If this were a real combat situation- and if MMA competitions are seperated from real combat, they have no point as a spectacle, that is why they exist, and challenge boxing for an audience- there shouldnt be this sort of TKO.

If we are watching MMA, we are quite willing to see people die. LET THERE BE DEATHSPORT. That is the only fuel for MMA as entertainment. No one wants to see Kimbo Slice take a knee and come back next month to take our money. If he doesnt want to fight, he shouldnt step into the ring. In the post-fight interviews, Seth Petrocelli was clearly intimidated by a fully-unknocked out Kimbo Slice standing next to him. DONT STOP THE FUCKING FIGHT. Let us watch boxing if we want to see TKO’s. Let us see who can whip whom, in a genuine fight.

I have always found comfort in the idea that human activity is actually a narrowly confined sphere in the grand scheme of things. That is, whereas we of the species homo semisapiens spend a great deal of energy building and destroying and contemplating and making babies and making those babies believe crazy lies, it yet remains a fact fairly easy to observe that we are small monkeys adrift in a sea so vast that, in laboring to understand its order, we can at best only grasp tiny simplistic fragments.

McCain’s response to the fact that he supported the Iraq war : (paraphrase) don’t pay attention to that. the next president can’t do anything about that, so the issue is moot. BUT, the issue of winning the war is of utmost importance. Obama has acknowledged the success of “the surge”. Disregard that fact immediately. Rather, believe me when I tell you that Obama has never acknowledged the success of the surge. (end paraphrase)

Obama acknowledges the success of  ”the surge”, praising it as a well-executed tactic, with praise to the wherewithal of the American solidiers and General Petraeus while carefully noting that war was founded on lies and a terrible mistake.

McCain’s response is that Obama has never acknowledged the success of “the surge”, and that Obama doesnt understand the difference between the terms “tactic” and “strategy”, the latter, McCain says, is what “the surge” is.

Seems to me that Obama, in calling “the surge” a tactic, has a more accurate grasp of the terms. McCain argues that the cause of the war is completely immaterial, and that “the surge” is his “strategy”.  It makes no difference, McCain says, why we went to war. The only thing to consider is how best to win the war. Why? Becuase, he says, the troops want to win the war, and we shouldn’t dissapoint the troops.

Let me, the author, inject something here.

Why, then, is democracy a good idea?

What I dislike most about the current political discourse is the partisanship. I don’t mean that I think people should be undecided, or that moderates are the best, or that being passionate about an issue or platform is no good.

(As it happens, we live in a time where most political choices are a matter of weighing evils; where , as Yeats put it, “the best lack all conviction, while the worst/ are full of passionate intensity.”)

But that isn’t what irks me. That to which I object, when I object to partisanship, is the internet discourse about politics. On the internet, one may easily encounter rants about politics that are substantially the same as rants about sports teams. One may take a sports rant and substitute, mutatis mutandis, the names of political parties (or politicians or ideologies) for the names of sports teams (or players or coaches) and end up with a broadside unchanged in its essential features. This is not a good thing. You internet people need to stop being stupid.

As is the case with most public complaints, what is really irking me is a personal problem. My real gripe is that I cannot seem to restrain myself from reading message boards filled with the most ridiculous rants based on limp thinking that should never have seen the light of day. Once upon a time, you had to be able to put a sentence together if you wanted to find a mass audience. Presently, any drivel one might want to disgorge is available to millions of people instantly. Your pants-crappingly bad message board posts are one click away from a worldwide audience. Brilliant writers throughout history have struggled, often unsuccessfully,  to find publishers. Now, you just need an open seat at a  college computer lab, or a computer at a public library, or a wireless signal and a stolen laptop whence you may fling your retarded opinions, like a monkey flinging its own excrement, upon whomever is willing to peruse your forum of choice.

Namely, me.

I don’t know why I read the shit. It just makes me dyspeptic. Why do I scroll down to read the comments on news stories? Why can’t I just take a mindful breath and go on about my business? Cloud-gathering Zeus knows I have enough to read… Oh well.

Anyways, with regard to politics, remember to keep an eye on the states. www.electoral-vote.com is good. Read their faq about the not-so-fine art of polling. Remember that we don’t elect presidents (of the u.s. of a., anyways) by a national popular vote… so why are we looking at national popular polling numbers?
